Farewell to Mush

For more than a decade, I have been submitting flash fiction, poetry, essays and photos to a student run literary magazine, Mush, at the two-year community college in my home town. I've never tallied the number of pieces they have published, but that isn't what really counts;

it's the experience the students get.

The student lit mag team - with help from an advisor - creates a publication schedule, solicits and sifts through submissions, selects their accepted pieces, devises the layout, notifies submitters, and works with the printer and funding sources. Up until a few years ago they also organized a launch event and reading. It's a great experience for all involved.

Sadly, our local campus is closing. Students will still be able to take a few university courses through our local technical college, but to get the full experience, will need to travel to one of the four year campuses. This was the first university I attended, and I, along with so many others, will miss the educational and cultural opportunities it brought, including Mush.
