Preplanning for Filming

We are getting ready for filming for one of the projects we are working on. The script is done, but is that enough? The short answer is no. There's still so much to do before we roll cameras if we want to keep things moving in a timely and budget friendly manner. Here are a few things we need to plan for in advance...
FIELD PRODUCTION SCHEDULE/ITINERARY - A schedule of who needs to be where on which day at what time is another critical concern in planning for filming. We need to know ahead of time which scenes and shots will be filmed in what order and at what location (assuming there are multiple locations). It's best to include call times and who needs to be on set when in addition to the 'itinerary'.
PROPS - We need to scour the script and create a comprehensive list of all the props and set dressing that we'll need for each scene. This is critical to keeping field production moving efficiently. Sometimes it takes quite a bit of time to find just the right prop, though others may be more generic.
TALENT - The project we'll be filming needs actors. This requires creating personas for the characters and including them with the casting call explaining a bit about the project and what we're looking for from actors. It's important to do this far enough in advance so that you can send the casting call, allow time for responses and auditions, selections, notifications, contracting and rehearsals prior to filming dates.
CRAFT SERVICES - I find it helpful to feed actors and crews on set. It saves time and prevents people from being delayed by traffic or restaurant lines if they leave the set in search of food. However, this means we need to determine any dietary restrictions in advance and create a plan for ordering and delivery of the food at the desired time. It's a little bit of a hassle, but still a great way to keep the crew and actors happy while maximizing the day.
These are just a few of the things to consider well in advance of your filming dates. We hope these tips help you plan ahead for efficient filming days.
